COMPARING MICROPLASTIC POLLUTION IN COASTAL SEDIMENTS & SURFACE WATERS
It is established that microplastics occur widely within marine systems; however, there is very limited knowledge regarding their vertical distribution between the water column and coastal sediments as well as human impacts on their distribution. This study will explore microplastics in Narragansett Bay, a highly urbanized region, and Third Beach, an underdeveloped area, within the state of Rhode Island, which will provide insights into the distribution of microplastics in this environment. Specifically, this research will analyze the microplastics presence in both the water column and sediments in order to reveal accumulation hot spots and factors contributing to the process. Moreover, by using the filtration, density separation, and Nile Red staining procedures as a low-cost and easily obtainable method, this research will investigate methods of detecting microplastics.
COMPARING MICROPLASTIC LEVELS IN COASTAL AND TAP WATER SOURCES
While we know that microplastics are prevalent in various water sources, we do not have much knowledge about their relative concentrations within natural settings compared to our everyday water usage. This experiment seeks to establish the variations in microplastics found in surface water from Narragansett Bay, which is a further inland and lesser impacted by humans, and sink water within school settings. This experiment seeks to find out the relationship of microplastics in different water sources based on their location and the presence of humans. This experiment uses simple techniques of filtration and Nile Red staining that enable easy access to microplastics.
